I find the line between meta and literary criticism quite tough. I think maybe I tend to include all media (film/tv) criticism because, well, the majority of it is fandom. If you get media/tv crit online, chances are it comes from a fanblog. Because mainstream critics have this snobbish attitude towards caring too much about 'just tv'. You review it and that's that. But books you can critique. Because literature is REAL ART. But with lit crit I feel like it's getting too close to the aca side of acafan, or just too 'mainstream' crit, not fan crit?

IDK. It is a thing I have noticed about myself, a tv/book double standard. My own flaws, exposed for your perusal. Enjoy.

"So, instead, I would like to take the time to speculate who some of Nolan’s other regulars might play.Michael Caine will be Cooper’s mentor—but I’m going to say he ends up evil this time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Cooper’s assistant. If Hathaway’s character isn’t the wife/girlfriend of Cooper, the loss of whom sends him spiralling into a pit of insanity, then I’m going to guess Marion Cotillard for that role. Then there’s Cillian Murphy, hopefully in a role that doesn’t require him to wear a bag over his head again. I’m having a hard time placing Tom Hardy. And I’d love for Ken Watanabe to show up, but I don’t know who I want him to be other than “someone cool.” (Of course, he’s Ken Watanabe.)"

(The Mary Sue, emphasis mine)

What's that you say? Nolan making another movie with fridged women? NO SHIT.

Carrie Trailer - "Carrie is like Harry Potter. Except she didn't get saved." FFF I WANT THAT FIC. (Glass Harp : Potter Theme)

Being Taken Seriously - the Double Standard. I made a post about make up and the female/male professional wear double standard a while back. Though actually I think most of that discussion was in the comments to the LJ post. Anyway, relevant.

I've learnt how to make ringlet curls with my hair straightener. THE. COOLEST. THING. (thank you youtube)

OH MY GOD. I just realised who my dentist reminds me of. Goran Visnjic. FUCK MY LIFE. HOT DENTISTS SHOULD BE AGAINST THE LAW.

I really wanted to include this (For all the women I have loved who were dragged through the mud) at [community profile] metanews but I didn't want to break the week old posts rule any further than I already have (it's a tough one to stick to). I already tweeted it I think, but I haven't got round to following anyone on [ profile] nemonclature or doing anything useful with it, so I'm currently just shouting into the void.

The Other 11 Doctors: Genderswapped Doctor Who - Sort of related to my genderswap recs request earlier, though mostly it just makes me sad, especially the reported con audience reaction when Moffat asked about a female Doctor.

Dancing on the Edge has both Goode and Angel Coulby in. WIN. Plus Ejiofor who's pretty awesome. Why do I never know what's happening on TV?

... Wait, I know, it's because I don't have a TV. >_<. I should spend more time on iplayer.

Orwell was better than Huxley or Hemingway and why do we read the classics anyway. - Essay comparing Orwell with the both of them and how his visions of the future were more honest. Albeit not necessarily more correct.

Various things from the people I found from said friending meme: )

I went back to look over my old, really old archived posts because I thought RP had changed the way I post. My theory was, writing out speech as I do in RP to try and capture the feeling of dialogue for a 'video' or an 'audio' post, has had a knock on effect on the way I post here in my dw. As in, I now default on posting stream of monologue style. With a haphazard approach to punctuation (never my strong suit) -- full stops interchangeable with commas, run on sentences, question marks for rising intonation etc etc. (I haven't got to the point where I write out my occasional stutter, but, but, but...)

Anyway, so that's why I looked back, but then my old posts seem really quite chatty as well and I couldn't tell if there had been a noticeable difference, or if it was just a a matter of me becoming more comfortable in putting my thoughts out there on the internet.

ANYWAY. I got distracted and I found this Heroes macro. GOOD TIMES.

I am questioning my decision to get a plurk ([ profile] nemo_r). It seems to be twitter only sideways?

My tumblr isn't work-safe, mainly thanks to the Hawkeye initiative. This is highly frustrating to me.

The female lead at work has a tendency to say 'hi-ho' a lot in conversation. Which just makes me think of Veronica and Logan.

I started reading cleanwhiteroom's mathematique again because I've decided it will probably need multiple rereads before I get it, so the WIP thing is actually a positive. That or I'm just going to have to accept I don't understand the physics/maths side of things. It's not the plot that's difficult, it's twisty, but in a good way. It's just when Rush goes off on his mental maths-y physics-y bent and they're talking about zero protocol whatsits... WHOOSH is the sound it makes as it goes over my head. I still highly rec though. REC REC REC.

Also, thanks to reading other fans' journals I will be giving OUAT another go (for the femslash, Regina and Carlyle,) but I'm NGL, a part of me wants to jump around and shout at OUAT fans: SO NOW YOU LOVE ROBERT CARLYLE, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN SGU WAS DYING? WHERE WERE YOOOOOUUUU?

Justified question

Is Tim canonically gay? Is that too progressive for Justified? Is it fanon? Because I realised I was basically accepting it as fact in all Tim eps and IDK where exactly I got it from. It just seems like a thing that makes sense.

And on a completley different note, I found a couple of old posts where requireshate absolutely eviscerates Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series (here and here).

Yes, they are that awful, they're my terrible, bottom drawer, id-fic, shameful love, but they really are awful.

On the way to the airport, I saw this graffiti:

                    anticrist Photobucket

emo                        muerte a justin beiber

Attack the block, from [ profile] slippery_fish's rec. DUUUUUUUDE. IT LOOKS EPIC.

And there is The Sound of my Voice which looks like creepy, trippy fun.

Also, can I just get a plug in here for BSG: Blood and Chrome. IDK where it's being stalled exactly, most likely reason seems to be CGI costs money, but either way it' stuck between tv and webseries limbo and IT IS TOO AWESOME FOR THAT. I WANT IT NOW.

I spent the past however many hours on TVTropes, because, um, reasons. I ended up reading the SGU pages. It never fails to amuse me how people expect all fans to divide into the 'Young camp' or the 'Rush camp'.

Oh no no, guys. United we stand.

Also, did you know Greer used to voice Gerald from Hey Arnold? I literally did an 'OMG! NO WAI!' At the screen.

Also, also these crowning moments of funny mostly make me want to cry. OH SHOW, ♥ forever.

Seven Times Logan Echolls Went To Jail by sowell, Logan/Veronica -- God they're a fucking train crash. I love them.

For some reason I stopped following Dorothy Surrenders, I really don't know why. Anyway, I've been catching up, and this is very true. I think an L-word rewatch is on the books.

Late entry to the trailer post - The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, on [personal profile] china_shop's rec. It has the entire theatre set in, I think it's only missing Gambon and really, I don't miss him at all. (I may have transferred all my Dumbledore-hate onto his shoulders but whatever.) Dev Patel is tall and awkward and gangly and sort of hot in a way that bothers me because isn't he 16 or something?

I listened to the Farscape theme tune and I almost DIED. I need to rewatch that show like burning.

I hate POC extras. They feel like a spit in the face: 'Oh these people are here too, they have stories as well, but pffff those stories aren't important enough for us to focus on. Of course not. Fuck off.'

I like to watch blooper reels, they're pretty much the only reason I go to youtube. Watch this at about 4:26 -- Dracula defeated by baby. Best thing ever. Also it makes me want all the Blade: Trinity fic again, and I have to watch everything with Parker Posey in. ALSO I totally forgot Leoben was in it. I watched some Due South outtakes after reading a Ray/Fraser fic. They were funny. Leoben was adorable, it almost makes me want to watch the show. The Scream 4 ones are funny too, they mostly consist of people jumping out from behind doors in the scream get up. Also here's some Farscape ones since I mentioned it above.

Did you know 'puddle-jumper' is an actual term for light aircraft? I thought it was completely a Stargate thing.

You know what would be awesome? Coming Out balls. They could schedule them on Pride and everyone could dress up and dance and it'd all be fabulous.

I don't mean the generic Pride parties that they slap the words 'Coming Out' on in a lazy attempt at a pun. You'd have to be introduced to people, and be asked to dance, and it'd all be waltzes and cotillons and all that jazz. Except not jazz.

Um I guess it still wouldn't really be a very good way to come out, but whatever, I just want a chance to recreate my own personal gay Regency world. Honestly now, who hasn't had that desire at some point in their lives?

Fic summaries are the worst things. Not only are they a raging pain to write, they're just as irritating to read.

- An italicised cut off sentence that tells me...
- "A completely unhelpful excerpt that does at least give me some idea of the writer's style albeit nothing of the plot."
- A vague statement that tells me who and maybe where but very little of the what.

But I do recognise how difficult it is, once you've been so immersed in your fic, to pull out and try and define what exactly happened. What counts as spoiler and what are the most important bits and, fuck it, why can't they just read the damn thing and find out that way?

Feisty young prosecutor Stefan Salvatore has his world turned upside down when his next case is against the city's best defence lawyer: the charming and powerful Katherine Pierce. It only gets worse when Ms Pierce turns out to be 'Katherine'' the woman who swept him off his feet two years ago before disappearing.

So his dad owns 'Salvatore and Sons' and Damon is still a layabout and Stefan rebelled and is trying it on his own etc. and totally living with Lexi, and he met Katherine somewhere and sparks flew but she had to leave or something and it was all lost chance-y, but he's totally over it. Totally. Shuttup Lexi. And then his boss is like, here is your case, this is the lawyer you're facing. OH BTW it's Pierce, the scariest bestest lawyer who's back in town and then he realises she's the sexy lawyer he almost had sex with two years ago and he wants to die.

And then he's all I hate her I hate her she's so hot OMFG. I'm so not impressed, except that I am and GDI she's a fantastic lawyer as well and FML. And then there are the courtroom dramas and the sexy flirting banter dramas and the powerplay dramas and then sex forever.

I'm thinking Suits, The Good Wife, various romance novels, and all post-war Draco/Hermione fic ever written. (Srsly, so much of that falls into the usual-gender version of this cliche, except politicians not lawyers.)

I haven't started writing this or anything...

I would also like to see:

- Genderswap Reformed Rake:
'Female rake was just waiting for the right virginal male to come along.' (Icky whichever way you play it and I can't see this working in a 'real world' Regency scenario.)

- Genderswap Paranormal Romance: male hunter is seduced by 'Alpha female' werewolf or vampire. Plot also happens. Could possibly work as a Revenge AU

Any suggestions for fandoms and for any other cliches you'd like to see genderswapped?

So. They make a helicopter frame and attach a RED EPIC digital camera to it, then test drive it with ninjas

These people, these are cool people.

Only flaw is that the ninja clip has no soundtrack, so feel free to pick your own. I found Polica's 'Violent Games' worked quite well.

Also, fic that worldbuilt on that gorgeous setting, that told us more about the ninjas and the sword and the mysterious woman at the end? I WOULD BE ALL OVER THAT. YES PLEASE, INTERNET, THANK YOU.

Little Thor.

There is also Iron Baby which is amusing, albeit slightly creepy.

I'm still in the process of settling into dreamwidth. Mostly that means I'm going through batches of comms and people bookmarked and gradually extending my circle. (Halloo if I friended you!) Next I'll probably make further cuts over at lj as I try to add people's dw mirrors and drop their lj ones.

I feel the need to give the journal a haircut. Also I realise that tag is very useless without screencaps of what the change is, so I'm going to put caps and links next time so that it can actually serve some purpose.

'Get bent' is such an odd curse. )

Really interesting post by Aliette de Bodard, starting from Sherlock 2x03, but really talking about the representation of women in literature in the past and contrasting it to now. (Roughly summarised as: it was misogynist, but at least they were there, whereas now we barely even exist.)

I hate the 'cut corners' approach to canon 'ships. The ones where we don't see any development of the actual 'ship. We see the meeting and the lust, but after that we're just expected to believe in them as a couple. Tada! They're together. ... )

So true.

Question: Why do people keep the ashes from cremated bodies? People don't parts from buried bodies. Is it reassuring? Is it for a sense of connection with the one who's passed? Why is it socially acceptable to keep ash, but not bones or hair?

Interview with Nolan Gould from Modern Family on Ellen.

OMG this is the awesomest thing ever. He is so adorable, I love how Ellen and everyone in the audience is just dying from the cuteness. I imagine he'd be the most irritating brother to live with in the ENTIRE WORLD.

Music videos... I've only recently realised how fun these can be - since before I was mostly on the farm where a single youtube vid took half an hour to load, which kinda defeats the purpose. These have all been presiously linked on my journal at various times, but does anyone have any other recs?

This is what happens when the 'comfort' part is omitted from the h/c. (I CRY LIKE A BABY.) It's an epic comic strip about a girl raised by wolves. (GDI can I have fix it fic for this? Please?)

So, I love how tumblr is an efficient time-waster while I'm in class, requiring very little brainpower and not much typing. However, in the Hiddles/Loki fandom, there are these two BNFs who WANK THE WHOLE DAY LONG. It's sort of hilarious and tragic. )

The NY Times article - "They’re, Like, Way Ahead of the Linguistic Currrrve"

Which has been talked about by everyone and their mother, but I'm less interested in the 'OMG women can, like, invent stuff?' aspect of it, and more interested in the uses these phrases are put to. )

Pioneer One (via the rec by [personal profile] ein_myria) Unfortunate lack of anyone brown, but surprisingly good for a webseries. Or maybe my definition of web series is just out of date? Is there more good stuff out there? I've tried watching things on and off and mostly been disappointed, but if anyone has recs I'd certainly be interested in checking them out. I wasn't lying when I made those last straw posts. I've finally had enough. That's not to say I'm dropping my white men fandoms. I'm not. I love them, I'm not going to deny that. But I've reached the point where I just can't stand to continue as I have been, complaining and still doing nothing.

So here is my first step on the path to hypocrisy-free media consumption and critique. For every white men centric source I consume (tv/film/vid I watch, book/fanfic I read etc) I'm going to consume two things about women or POC, a corresponding source if I can, but if not, fic for film or book for vid or any permutation is fine, as long as it's two for every one.

It's not exactly arduous! More media to enjoy!

The same rule however, is going for fanworks. I've got my Wolf!Stiles fic to post soon, and after that I'll create two female/POC centric fics/fan works. (Oh, and a twofer only counts as one.) They don't have to be equivalent size, it's more about opening my mind to the possibilities, it's not like I don't have fics about women and POC rattling around in my skull, but instead of rattling and back burnering, I'm pushing them to the front.

Plus I can work on original fic as well, (in fact that should probably take priority, um). So my work won't always appear up here, but when it's fandom related it definitely will.
